Labour Day 2004 - a huge success
Over 15,000 people turned out for one of Brisbane's most successful Labour Day marches which began in Mary St and proceeded through the city to Roma St Parkland. This is the first year the celebrations have been held at the Parkland and the move was a huge success.
March Route
For the first time in three years the Labour Day march made its way through city streets. The march route for 2004 was:
- Assembly in Mary St
- Turn right into George St
- Right into Ann St
- Left into Albert St
- Enter Roma St Parklands from Albert St

Former Brisbane Lord Mayor Clem Jones with QCU General Secretary Grace Grace. Clem was participating in his 50th straight Labour Day march.

The CEPU (Plumbers Division) is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year and had record numbers turn out to march. The union also won the annual 'best union contingent' trophy.

NTEU members also turned out in big numbers. The NTEU led this year's march.
Theme
This year's theme was 'Union rights are human rights'. This theme recognises the contributions of unions not only in the industrial sphere but in the global community.
May Day Bowls Carnival
Once again the Wavell Heights Bowls Club hosted the May Day Carnival on Saturday May 1. The day was very successful and has become a permanent fixture on the union movement calendar.
Union Golf Day
The 'Bob Hawke Labour Day Scramble' was held at Nudgee Golf Club on Friday May 7. The event was a great success and as with the Bowls Carnival, it will become an important part of the Labour Day Celebrations calendar in coming years.
